Here’s something I am learning about my watercolor style: It may be a little heavy-handed and it’s definitely on the graphic side of water coloring.
Being that my day job is that of a graphic designer, it makes sense that I would gravitate toward a more graphic style.
I read the book a few years ago entitled, “Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. There are a lot of nuggets to love in his book, but this one in particular is a stand out:
“Don’t throw any of yourself away. If you have two or three passions, don’t feel like you have to pick and choose between them. Don’t discard. Keep all your passions in your life.”
I have neglected this creative side for so long that I think it was drying up. Maya Angelou said, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
But I think if you don’t use it you are in danger of losing it.
So don’t think you have to choose one medium, one style, one hobby…do them all. And, for goodness sakes, don’t neglect one for so long that you almost kill that part of yourself.
Create because it makes you happy. And for no other reason. Make time for creativity in your life. Yeah, life is chaotic and messy, still make the time to do something just for you. Not for money or fame but just because you want too.
“Don’t throw any of yourself away.”
